Chapter 517: Church
Chapter 517: Church
Through observation, Thea Shaw already understood Apple Hale fairly well.
After some contemplation, Thea Shaw thought of a way.
"Auntie, you’re worried I’m helping you too much and you can’t repay me, but I actually have something I want to ask you."
Apple Hale, surprised, asked, "What do you want to ask me?"
"Let’s go to the hospital. We can chat while we get checked. Don’t worry, it’s something real."
Seeing how she said it, Apple Hale hesitated for a moment before agreeing to go to the hospital with Thea Shaw.
Once at the hospital, waiting for the check-up after registering, Thea Shaw asked her, "Auntie, can you try to remember carefully, when did the smell on you start to appear?"
According to Dr. Samuel Hayes, the origin and cause of the disease are unknown.
Whether it’s contagious is also yet to be determined.
After hearing Thea Shaw finally mention the smell, Apple Hale started feeling embarrassed, but seeing Thea Shaw’s serious expression without any disgust, she felt relieved and thought carefully, "I think it was last month."
Smells, once they appear, are quite sensitive.
Apple Hale remembered, maybe there was naturally a smell in the house, initially her husband and son didn’t mind.
It was only when Apple Hale went out to buy groceries that day, and the old lady selling vegetables, who had a good relationship with her, frowned and asked, "Apple Hale, where have you been shopping? Why do you smell like something’s gone bad?"
At that time, Apple Hale thought she had really touched something, but after sniffing carefully and not smelling anything, she let it go.
Until she went out every day, seeing neighbors pass by her showing those disgusted expressions...
She realized she might have really gotten some smell on her.
But the smell couldn’t be washed off, couldn’t be smelled, and couldn’t be removed.
Then her husband and son at home started complaining about a continuous bad smell in the house, and until Apple Hale herself smelled that bad smell on her husband and son, she began to realize that something might be straying from the norm.
She dared not think about what it was.
"Where have you been that you might pick up such a smell?"
Apple Hale recalled carefully, "I... I haven’t been to any special places."
Her daily life is very regular, buying groceries, cooking at home, not even visiting neighbors’ houses.
Except... going to church.
Thea Shaw saw Apple Hale’s eyes flicker, knowing she wasn’t telling the truth.
Life is too regular, any anomaly would reveal where the problem is. Thea Shaw personally saw her enter the church.
Since Apple Hale didn’t mention it, the problem clearly lies with the church.
But she herself might not necessarily think there’s an issue with the church.
"Have you been to the church as well?"
Thea Shaw chose to speak directly, unsurprisingly causing Apple Hale to become a bit flustered, "Ah... how do you know?"
"I saw you go to the church this morning, I went there too."
Apple Hale lowered her head, unwilling to speak more about church matters.
Because the priest had said, the church is an ordinary place, but what happens inside shouldn’t be spread.
"Think carefully, you haven’t been anywhere else, where could the smell on you have come from?"
Those words from Thea Shaw made Apple Hale recall that she hadn’t been anywhere besides the church, and the smell indeed seemed to start appearing after going to the church.
But...
She didn’t smell anything strange inside the church, and the church is a place that brings people peace of mind; she didn’t feel that kind of place would have a problem.
Apple Hale was a bit stuck, but not that foolish.
With Thea Shaw’s questions, she sensitively perceived something, looking up, "Do you want to ask me about the church?"
