Chapter 172 - 158: Woman
Luna Langley was visibly surprised.
"You’re coming back to the Langley estate with me?"
"We’ve been married for a month, and I still haven’t met your family," Silas Lockwood said.
Luna Langley had met Silas Lockwood’s mother. The day after they registered their marriage, Silas had taken her to have a meal with Yvette Shaw. But Luna had never taken Silas back to meet her own family.
"You really don’t have to..."
"Let me go with you." Silas Lockwood looked at Luna Langley. "Even an ugly son-in-law has to meet the in-laws eventually, right?"
’Ugly? He was clearly the most handsome man she had ever seen.’
"That’s not what I meant."
"I know. I was just kidding. In any case, we’re married now. Visiting your family is the right thing to do."
"Alright, but I have to warn you, my family... isn’t as friendly as you might think."
Silas Lockwood already knew. He’d heard from Aunt Sinclair that Luna Langley was given a hard time every time she went back to the Langley estate. That was precisely why he wanted to go with her even more.
They agreed to leave from Sutton Gardens together at six o’clock after work.
Ordinarily, Luna Langley dreaded going back to the Langley estate most of all. But her grandfather had ordered that the entire Langley family must return for dinner every Friday night. Old Master Langley still held a portion of the Langley Group’s shares, so no matter how unwilling Luna was, she had to keep up appearances.
But today, she felt a little different.
For the first time, someone was going back to the Langley estate with her. Faintly, she felt like she had someone to lean on.
At six in the evening, Luna Langley and Silas Lockwood arrived at the Langley estate.
Old Master Langley had five children in total: three daughters and two sons.
Luna Langley’s father was the fourth child and the elder of the two sons. He was also the most accomplished of the five siblings. The Langley Group had been founded by Luna’s father himself.
Unfortunately, Luna’s father had passed away in a car accident three years ago.
After her father passed away, Luna Langley took over the Langley Group. Because she held all the power, she became the target of public criticism within the Langley family.
"No matter what they say in there, don’t take it to heart," Luna Langley warned Silas Lockwood as they got out of the car.
"Okay."
Inside the Langley estate, all the family members had already arrived.
It was Silas Lockwood’s first time at the Langley estate. The moment he stepped inside, he drew everyone’s attention.
"Well, well, if it isn’t President Lockwood!" The one who spoke was Luna Langley’s youngest uncle, Blake Langley. "A few days ago, Luna mentioned she’d registered her marriage with the president of the Lockwood Group. I thought she was spouting nonsense. I never expected she’d actually bring President Lockwood home."
Old Master Langley glanced at Silas Lockwood.
He disliked Luna Langley, and by extension, he disliked her husband.
"Getting married is such a huge matter, yet you didn’t even discuss it with the family. Your wings have certainly grown stiff."
"Grandfather, who I marry is my own private affair. Does that require your approval as well?" Luna Langley retorted.
The old master snorted. "Since you’re already married, it’s about time you started preparing for a child. For a woman, supporting your husband and raising children is the most important thing in life. You can set your work aside for now."
’What a heavy topic to bring up right off the bat.’
Luna Langley glanced at Silas Lockwood, but his expression was calm.
"We’re not planning on having children for now," Luna Langley said.
"If you’re not going to have children, then why did you get married? Let’s be blunt, you just can’t bear to part with that position. You don’t want to hand over power to your youngest uncle!"
"Grandfather, why are you always trying to make me hand over power to my uncle?"
"You’re a woman, hogging that high position day after day. People will think our Langley family has no men left!"
"What’s wrong with being a woman? Women can give birth and raise children, and they can also strive in the workplace. Every woman has the right to choose the lifestyle that suits her best according to her own wishes and circumstances. Grandfather, why are you always so biased? It’s as if in your eyes, women are a class below men. What, were you not born of a woman?"
"Insolent!"
Furious and exasperated, the old master snatched up a teacup from beside him and hurled it at Luna Langley.
Luna Langley couldn’t dodge in time and thought she was about to be hit. But Silas Lockwood, who was beside her, quickly raised his hand and blocked the teacup for her.
