Chapter 389 - 382: I’m Here to Apologize
Skylar Hayes was still shaken by the scare she’d had that morning. Even after returning from her grocery shopping, she was in a daze, her eyes constantly darting around as if still searching for that figure.
When she got home, went upstairs, and stepped out of the elevator, she saw someone standing at her door. It startled her. A closer look revealed... Cedric Grant!
She stopped in her tracks. Perhaps from the shock, the keys she had just taken out slipped from her hand and fell to the floor.
Cedric Grant had his back to her. Hearing the sound, he turned around, immediately straightened up, and smiled. "Skylar, you’re back?"
Skylar Hayes composed herself, bent down to pick up her keys, and walked over. Though her tone was cool, she still asked, "What are you doing here?"
"I... came to see you," Cedric Grant said. Noticing her cold attitude, he quickly added, as if explaining himself, "Actually, I’ve been meaning to come see you and Clara for a while now. But, you know, I’ve been really busy, so it kept getting delayed."
Skylar Hayes unlocked the door, a faint smile on her face. "Yes, I always knew you were busy. I just never knew what you were so busy with. Thinking back on it now, running back and forth, juggling two women and two daughters... of course you were busy."
An awkward expression crossed Cedric Grant’s face. He started to say her name, his voice dry, "Skylar..." but trailed off.
Skylar Hayes pushed the door open, glanced at him, and said, "If there’s nothing else, you should go. Don’t leave Jean feeling as lost and helpless as I once did."
With that, she walked straight inside, ignoring him as she went to shut the door.
But Cedric Grant blocked it with his hand. "No, no, I do have something to talk about."
Caught off guard, Skylar Hayes stumbled back as he pushed the door open and squeezed inside.
She couldn’t help but frown, but she didn’t say anything. She just glanced outside, then pulled the door wide open.
For a divorced man and woman, it was better to keep things out in the open.
Skylar Hayes went into the kitchen to put away the groceries she’d bought. Only then did she come back out, sit on the sofa, and ask, "What is it?"
She didn’t invite Cedric Grant to sit, but he didn’t seem to feel awkward. He sat down on his own, wringing his hands as he looked at her. "Skylar, I came to apologize. I admit, I was wrong in the past. I hid my relationship with Jean from you, and I kept it hidden for over twenty years."
"Over twenty years ago, when you were kidnapped, I was at my wit’s end day after day, terrified you’d be harmed in the slightest. Jean was the one who stayed by my side through it all. And to save you, she helped a lot..."
"Helped by seducing the husband of her best friend of several decades?" Skylar Hayes interrupted him with a cold laugh.
’They probably hooked up back then, didn’t they?’
"No, we got together after we got you back. I wanted to thank her, and she accepted. We were both so happy that you were safe, so we had a few drinks, and then... things just sort of happened in a drunken haze.
Skylar, you have to believe me. I didn’t mean to betray you. Neither Jean nor I ever intended to betray you."
Skylar Hayes couldn’t help but retort, "Even if the first time wasn’t intentional, what about the twenty-plus years after that? Was that not intentional either?"
’All her life, she had been gentle, kind, and yielding, but that didn’t mean she was a fool. When a man and a woman get into trouble after a few drinks, is it really the alcohol, or was the desire there all along? They were all adults; who didn’t know the truth?’
