Chapter 489: The Rupture
Chapter 489: The Rupture
"Huh? But why?" Xue Cong didn’t know why he wanted her to do so.
She thought about it for a moment, bit her lower lip and asked, "Are you thinking of getting Xiu as your concubine?"
"No? Where did that idea come from?" Lin Xuan Qi rolled his eyes at her and shook his head.
Xiu was a capable servant girl but he wasn’t interested in her at all.
It would be disastrous for him to take Xiu as a concubine when Xiu was Xue Cong’s best helper.
He would only make Xue Cong lose her trust in him and Xiu if he did so.
Lin Xuan Qi lay down onto the bed beside her and placed his hand on her belly.
"I want you, Yue Jie, Yue Xin and Shi Shi to be as ready as possible to bear me a child."
That was the best excuse he could come up with and it made her anxious for a moment.
She held onto his hand that was on her belly, and she felt apologetic that she wasn’t able to do so for him so far.
"I will let them know..." Xue Cong said softly and closed her eyes.
Lin Xuan Qi cursed at the situation and his inability to tell her what he knew.
He held her closer to him and closed his eyes.
The cold of the winter night was foreign to them with both of them embracing each other for warmth.
There were only the occasional howls of the wind that blew by and the watchman’s gong echoing whenever it was struck throughout the night.
...
Soon, it was the day for the dinner with Zhao Geng Nian.
Lin Xuan Qi dressed as well as he could with the jade pendants and other accessories that he got from Sima Ye and the others.
He was out to get more franchisees for his franchise and he had to at least look the part of a young master.
"Don’t stay up too late waiting for me." Lin Xuan Qi waved at Xue Cong and the others before he got into the horse carriage.
It would be a normal day of business for him, but it was not for the others in the mansion.
Xue Cong, Yue Jie, Yue Xin and Liu Shi Shi were at the gate dressed in many layers of clothes with a fur coat on top.
Servant girls with small furnaces with coal burning inside stood beside them.
Even though they were cultivating and their bodies felt warm, Lin Xuan Qi still wanted them to keep warm and well supplemented with herbal soup.
Mei Jiao, who was standing beside Xue Cong, was happy to see Lin Xuan Qi doing so as it meant that he was serious about them bearing him a child.
In her mind, that was the most important thing for them to be doing.
Extending the family line was the most crucial thing for the Lin Clan.
Having all the wealth and power meant nothing if you didn’t have an heir that you could trust them with.
That was the unbreakable belief of the older folks like Mei Jiao.
And she could only pray for Xue Cong to be the first to do so for him.
But she frowned when she overheard Yue Jie and Yue Xin’s conversation.
"Are you sure? Maybe you’ve miscalculated." Yue Jie said to Yue Xin after she heard what Yue Xin had told her.
"I’m sure of it." Yue Xin twitched her mouth and replied.
Yue Jie frowned and she didn’t know whether Yue Xin was right.
And if she was right, it could only mean one thing.
She quickly turned to Xue Cong, bowed at her and said, "It’s cold out here, we will get back inside to discuss the budget first."
Xue Cong nodded her head at them and said, "You are right, let’s get back to the mansion."
She held tightly onto the side of her sleeve and glanced at Mei Jiao before they turned around and headed back into the mansion.
Mei Jiao held onto Xue Cong’s arm, and they walked quietly towards the main hall.
All of them were in their own thoughts except for Liu Shi Shi.
She wasn’t too bothered with something like who was the first one to give birth to a child for Lin Xuan Qi.
But even if she wasn’t bothered by it, she knew what it meant for the others so she kept quiet about it as she walked along with them.
The dynamics for all of them were most likely about to change.
Mei Jiao pulled Xue Cong to her room while Yue Jie and Yue Xin walked the other way to Yue Jie’s room.
Leaving Liu Shi Shi heading straight for the main hall.
...
Mei Jiao closed the doors of her room behind her and she held onto Xue Cong’s hand and asked, "Did you hear what Yue Jie and Yue Xin said?"
Xue Cong nodded her head in silence.
She was still digesting the fact and what it meant.
Mei Jiao frowned and tried to console her daughter.
"It’s fine. I think you would be the next one soon... Have you been trying with him?" She asked and Xue Cong nodded silently again.
She had never seen Xue Cong so dejected before and she quickly brought Xue Cong to the seat inside her room.
"If he is spending time with you, then it’s good news for you." She patted the back of Xue Cong’s hand and said.
"Thanks, mother. I know." Xue Cong finally calmed down enough to speak.
Her mother poured a cup of tea for her and passed it to her.
"Treat her well and treat her child as your own.
"The worst thing for you to do is to get jealous of her and cause a headache for Xuan Qi." Mei Jiao was silent for a very long time before she mustered enough of her courage and said.
Xue Cong nodded her head and promised, "I will, that was what I’ve been thinking all along..."
She thought that she could easily overcome her emotions, but when it was real, it still stung a little for her.
Why her and why wasn’t it me?
This thought went through her mind continuously before she snapped out of it.
Lin Xuan Qi wouldn’t like it if things weren’t cordial among them.
