Chapter 987 - 948: Becoming a Little Sister for the First Time
Curly said tsundere-ly, "Fine, for the sake of the diamond, I’ll reluctantly not throw Little Monster away. But you can’t let him live next door to me. I’m afraid if I get up at night and see him, I’ll get scared."
Brother’s nursery was right next to Curly’s room. When they had it built, they thought it’d be nice for the siblings to be close and bond. Who knew Sister would嫌弃 Brother for being ugly and refuse to have anything to do with him.
"Okay, I’ll have someone find him another room, alright?" Adrian coaxed.
Curly finally laughed, and Adrian laughed along with her. "So you’re not mad anymore."
"Mm, I’m not mad anymore."
Adrian looked at the little girl and said dotingly, "I’ve spoiled you rotten. Now even I get bullied by you."
"Dad, do you like me the most, or like Brother the most?"
"Of course I like you the most."
"Really?"
"If I’m lying, I’m a little dog!"
"Daddy, I love you too!"
Curly wrapped her arms around Adrian’s neck, and he took the chance to pick her up. The two of them headed toward the hospital, Curly resting her chin on his shoulder, watching all the pregnant women walking by with their big bellies.
Curly said, "Dad, you and Mom better not have any more babies. Little Monster is a boy, so if he’s ugly then he’s just ugly. But if you have a girl who’s as ugly as Little Monster, what are we gonna do?"
"Mm, you’ve got a point."
...
Back in the ward, when Sienna Johnson heard about Curly disliking her brother for being ugly and wanting to throw him away, she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
"You didn’t tell her she was just as ugly as her brother when she was little?"
"I never saw what she looked like when she was just born, how would I know she was as ugly as our son?" Adrian finished, then shot Sienna a resentful look.
"..."
"This is all your fault. If you hadn’t run off back then, I would’ve gotten to see Curly right after she was born."
He was bringing up old history, clearly looking for trouble.
"You went and married another woman; if I didn’t leave, what was I supposed to stay for?
That cucumber of yours got used by another woman, and then I use it again—disgusting or not? You might not find it dirty, but I do." Living with Adrian for so long, Sienna had stopped being squeamish about dirty jokes.
"..."
"Me, Miss, I’ve got money and looks. I abandoned my legitimate-wife slot and what, I’m supposed to be your side chick? I’d have to be brain‑damaged!"
"Let’s not talk about the past anymore."
"You’re the one who brought it up."
"Alright, it’s my fault, okay?"
Sienna gazed at her son with her face full of love. Her son would eat and then sleep, ignoring everyone.
When he wasn’t sleeping, even if someone tried to tease him he wouldn’t smile. He’d just stare straight at the person without blinking, eyes saying very clearly:
Are you stupid or what!
"I see the baby in the next ward crying all day, but our son never cries. You think there’s something wrong with him?" Adrian poked the baby.
"There’s something wrong with you!"
"Then you have to admit he’s not like other kids, right?"
"How’s he ’not crying’? If you don’t go along with him, he cries, and he cries loud enough to blow the roof off. ... Hey, stop poking him. If you make him cry, you’re the one soothing him."
"That’s all bad habits from being spoiled. If he doesn’t listen, give him a spanking!"
"If you poke his face again, I’ll spank you."
Adrian immediately behaved himself.
Curly walked in wearing a floral dress, with George trailing behind her. When George saw Adrian and Sienna, he greeted them very politely.
Except...
"You’re not allowed to call them Father‑in‑law and Mother‑in‑law!" Curly said unhappily.
"Heh heh..."
After the awkward laugh, he still kept calling them that.
"Where did you go play this time?" Sienna looked at her daughter and asked.
"We went to buy ice cream."
"It’s getting cold; you can’t eat that anymore."
"George treated me. I said I didn’t want it, and he still insisted I eat..." Curly turned to George and asked, "George, isn’t that right?"
George just smiled and said nothing.
"Stop bullying George all the time."
Curly stuck out her tongue. As soon as she opened her mouth, the smell of cream wafted out. "Mom, George doesn’t mind, why are you so nosy?"
"I’m your mom. If I don’t keep an eye on you, who will?"
"Let Old Man take care of me!"
"Watch your manners, don’t call your dad Old Man."
"But he is old."
Adrian sensibly stayed out of it. Being called Old Man wasn’t going to cost him a chunk of flesh.
Sienna looked at the two kids. She still didn’t want things between Sister and Brother to get so tense, so she tried to persuade her,
"Now that we have Brother at home, Mom and Dad still love you just the same. And from now on there’ll be one more person in this world who, together with Mom and Dad, will love you and be someone you can love too. You two will be really close someday, you know?"
"No way!"
Sienna kept explaining to her how much her parents loved her, that even with a brother their love for her wouldn’t change, and that having a baby was, in large part, to give her a companion.
"Then I’d rather have George as my companion!"
"That’s not the same thing." Sienna told her patiently,
"With a Brother, Mom and Dad will love you even more, because you’re the Sister now. Sister has to help Mom and Dad take care of Brother. That’s a big responsibility..."
"I’m not taking care of Little Monster!"
Curly shot a disgusted glance at her brother, who was ugly like a little old man. She curled her lip and quickly looked away, not wanting to give him a second look.
"You’re the Sister; Brother will see you as his role model and listen to you in the future..."
"Little Monster will listen to me in the future?" Thinking about the authority that came with being a Sister, Curly got a tiny bit drunk on the idea.
"That depends on how you behave. If you’re a good Sister, of course he’ll listen to you. If you’re not a good Sister..."
George said, "Curly will be a good Sister."
Sienna patted her head and didn’t go on.
Just then the Nurse came to take the baby for a bath. Sienna didn’t let Adrian tag along. She put the baby into the stroller and said to Curly,
"Miss Sister, push Brother over for his bath now, okay?"
"Me?" Curly pointed at her own nose, suddenly not so confident.
"Mm. Mom’s entrusting Brother to you. You have to bring him back safe and sound, okay?"
"..."
"There are lots of babies where they do the baths, so don’t lose Brother.
If you lose him, then he’ll have to be thrown into an Orphanage like Mom was.
You know how pitiful the kids in the Orphanage are: they don’t have enough to eat, no pretty clothes to wear, and they don’t even get Longevity noodles on their birthdays...
When they get bullied, there’s no Mom and Dad to stand up for them...
Brother’s so little; if someone dumps him at an Orphanage, how sad would that be.
Curly, don’t you think so?"
Curly nodded.
"Off you go. When you come back, Dad will buy you cake."
Curly glanced at Little Monster in the stroller and muttered, "He’s this ugly, how could I possibly mix him up with anyone?"
Even though she said that, she still took a few extra looks to memorize what Brother looked like, afraid she’d mix him up during bath time.
"Mother‑in‑law, I’ll go with Curly. I’ll definitely bring the baby back."
"Alright."
