Chapter 433: Unnecessary Risk
Chapter 433: Unnecessary Risk
Jamal stood in front of the bathroom mirror with a towel hanging around his neck as he buttoned the sleeve of his shirt.
The warm water from his shower had helped a little with the exhaustion in his body, but not enough.
He still felt tired.
The kind of tired that settled deep inside the bones.
Too much had been happening in his life lately and he felt like he was always yet to physically recover from one before he was thrust into the next.
And now he was preparing to leave Westend already.
He was yet to give Dawn a call. He planned to do so once he was dressed and ready to leave for the airstrip so they could talk on his way.
His phone rang on the cabinet.
He picked it up immediately thinking it was Dawn, but smiled all the same when he saw Tom’s name.
"Hello, my love," Jamal greeted sweetly as he picked up.
"This isn’t Dawn," Tom replied, assuming Jamal hadn’t checked the caller’s identity.
"I know that baby," Jamal said with a grin.
Tom chuckled, "Are you alright upstairs?"
Jamal laughed, "I’m perfectly fine, sweety."
Tom laughed, shaking his head, "Jamal, please. I’m not in the mood."
"You should be telling Lucy that, darling, not me," Jamal said, making Tom holler with laughter.
"How are things there?" Tom asked when he’d settled.
Jamal adjusted the collar of his shirt and walked out of the bathroom. "Quiet," he said. "They’re both still asleep. They plan to get married the moment they get back to Ludus."
Tom hummed thoughtfully. "So soon?"
"Yeah," Jamal said as he walked toward the window and pulled the curtains aside slightly.
Morning light poured into the room.
"Have you guys figured out what to do next?" Jamal asked. "Because I still don’t understand why we’re not reporting the lawyer to the police. We know he’s involved in what happened at the hotel."
Tom was quiet for a moment.
Then he said calmly, "Because it is wiser to not reveal all the cards in your hands when you don’t know what card your enemy is holding. Right now we don’t know who else is involved apart from the lawyer."
Jamal frowned slightly.
Tom continued, "If we make a wrong move, everyone connected to this situation would know Genevieve is alive."
Jamal leaned against the window.
"We spoke extensively over it..."
"By ’we’ you mean Uncle Harry and you?" Jamal asked.
"I mean everyone. Your Dad and grandfather inclusive. Stefan is a part of the clan whether or not he believes so. And he is part of the gentleman club too. We look out for our own. And Genevieve, well, our relationship with her is weird but she is family in a way too. We failed her once already, we won’t compromise her safety twice."
Jamal sighed softly.
"What if Stefan goes to ask about the documents the lawyer claimed Genevieve needed to sign before the explosion? He could say Genevieve mentioned it to him before the explosion." he suggested. "Maybe they’ll slip up."
"That would put Stefan in unnecessary risk," Tom said immediately. "Right now the safest thing is allowing everyone believe they succeeded."
"And then?"
Tom’s tone remained calm. "And then we watch," Tom replied simply. "People get careless when they think they’ve won. Let’s see what happens to the evidence Genevieve submitted about Ryan’s illegal dealings. Let’s see what is done about it and who gets prosecuted. We still have our own copy of it and will make our own investigations. We will be following it up closely."
Jamal nodded slowly.
That made sense.
"You do realize that they didn’t just try to get rid of a part of our family, right? They killed my staff, ruined my hotel, and obstructed my business. Now my staff will be out of work until this is sorted. I have to take care of them," Tom said, his tone hardening a little, "I won’t allow this be swept under the rug. So, don’t worry about it. No one will be going Scot-free."
Jamal rubbed his jaw thoughtfully. He hadn’t thought about how much the explosion at the hotel had cost Tom. "I’m sorry about all of that."
"Don’t be. We want you three to be safe. We need things to play out naturally before making any move," Tom added. "Rushing now could ruin everything."
"Alright," Jamal said finally.
"So, are you ready to leave?" Tom asked.
"Almost," Jamal replied. "I’m heading to the airstrip soon."
Then his expression softened slightly."How is my wife and son?"
Tom chuckled lightly. "Since when did you have a wife and son? I don’t remember attending your wedding."
"C’mon baby," Jamal said, and Tom laughed.
"They’re both here at the office," Tom said.
Jamal blinked. "At the office?"
"Yes. My assistant is currently giving them a tour of the company."
Jamal smiled. "How did Josh react when he saw I-Global?"
"Exactly like you did," Tom said amusedly. "He asked if that was where you worked and if your office was larger and finer than mine. Then he asked if I was wealthier than you."
Jamal laughed. "What did you tell him?"
"I told him to ask you why I’m your mentor," Tom said and Jamal laughed out loud.
They were silent for a couple of seconds then Jamal sighed, "Thank you, Tom."
"What?" Tom asked with a slight frown.
"It just occurred to me now that just as you’re keeping Dawn and Josh under your roof, you kept me and my mom too. You taught me majority of what I know. HAJ studios grew exponentially over the years since I took over because of your guidance..."
"And bla bla. Shut up and go find yourself something to eat. You are beginning to sound hungry, honey," Tom teased.
Jamal roared with laughter.
"So what’s the plan? Are they going to be spending the entire day with you at the office?"
"Josh will spend some time at the playground. He was beside himself with joy when I took him there before bringing him up to my office," Tom said with a chuckle.
Jamal smiled at the image in his head.
Then Tom added casually, "And Dawn would be having lunch with your mother at a nearby restaurant before we all leave for her therapy session."
Jamal straightened slightly. "Lunch with my mom? Nobody told me about lunch."
"Because it’s not your business obviously."
Jamal frowned. "It is my business if my wife is meeting my mother."
"She is not even your fiancée yet." Tom pointed out with a chuckle.
Jamal sighed dramatically. "You enjoy pissing me off, don’t you?"
Tom chuckled. "Get on your flight," he said. "And stop behaving like an overprotective husband before you even marry her."
Before Jamal could respond, Tom hung up the call and Jamal scowled as he lowered the phone.
"Overprotective husband? Pot calling kettle black," Jamal muttered with a shake of his head.
